Didn’t the Nazis love to define themselves as victims, even while they were burning synagogues and smashing non-Ayran business’s windows? It’s notable that ‘I’m a victim, let me hit you again’ is never an atheist tactic. You’re right about these people having bad consciences.

Minor quibble from a pedant. It should be ‘Nazis’ did so-and-so, not ‘Nazi’s’.

So Colson thinks he’s a “religious leader”?

He may be a religious inciter, he may be a religious apologist, but he’s mostly a blowhard and huckster. I distrust him, as his own religious convictions came – surprise! – after his conviction for his part in the Watergate affair.

What we’ve got going on here is plain old ordinary guilt. Colson’s conscience won’t let him rest, because he knows that he and his fellow believers have been party to unprovoked cruelty and oppression of a minority that has done him no harm beyond merely existing, in defiance of his own prejudice and bigotry.

The only part of the article with which I disagree. I don’t think Colson is introspective enough to realize this, even subconsciously. Rather, I think it’s simply that Conservative Christians never pass up an opportunity to define themselves as victims and as martyrs. Remove that, and they really have nothing left.

I find Chuck Colsen’s statement, to say the least, compared to his reputation. He has a “shady” history with strong involvement in Watergate. People need to look him up and bring that to light.

Your opening sentence to this post succinctly summarizes Mr. Colson’s tactic. Bravo!

IMHO – neither Mr. Colson, nor Christians of his ilk, are troubled in the slightest by the rich irony of their “Nazi” references. The Christianists in favour of Prop 8 shamelessly misrepresented the truth throughout their campaign. That they should now indulge in self-justifying spin after the main event is simply par for the course.
