As PZ Myers has rediscovered, they are all about the love! Look at how they react to even a little critique of their supposedly unquestionable truth!

One of the things that makes it such a great story is that it was bsed on a story written by better storytellers than they.

Allow me to recommend "The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark", Dennis R MacDonald.

The money quote comes with:

Dumplin’ thinks this issue is “very uncomfortable for the believer” and it may well be for the kind of Christian who has also been taught that God is your personal buddy. For those of us more educated, however, the idea of God as remote is no more or less than we’d expect — and we’re very comfortable — thanks, Dumplin’, but you can go back in your playpen now.

Holding appears to have more contempt for the vast majority of Christians in the world - who have, in fact, been taught and firmly believe that they have a personal relationship with God - than you, Duncan. They are less "educated" than him, which apparently makes him superior in some undefined way. Why is it that the most vocal advocates for Jesus on the internet appear to have the most repulsive personalities?

I'm so honored to be a part Holding's parody. I finally said something compelling enough to at least be called a dummy!

Great post! This is a compellingly plausible account of the way religious myths get built up and refined over time.

I've had the distinct displeasure of encountering Holding once upon a time as well. I wrote him one reply, but since he's incapable of conducting a civil debate, I resolved not to spend any further time on him. As I'm sure you've noticed, he tends to get more aggressive and belligerent when he's in a tight spot, as if he could make up for the weakness of his arguments by coming up with wittier insults to cast at his opponents.
